When glass needs to be replaced

Small chips can sometimes be filled, but replacement is the right call when:

A crack is longer than a few inches or has reached the edge of the windshield
Damage sits in the driver's line of sight, where a filled chip still distorts the view
A side or rear window has shattered (tempered glass breaks into pieces and cannot be repaired)
The glass was disturbed in a collision and the bond to the body is no longer trustworthy
Moisture or fogging has crept between the layers of a laminated windshield

How we install auto glass

Remove the old glass without damaging the pinch weld

The pinch weld is the painted metal flange the windshield bonds to. Careless removal scratches it, and a scratched flange rusts under the new urethane. We cut the old bead cleanly, trim it to a thin, even layer, and prime any bare metal before the new glass goes in.

Bond with automotive urethane, not silicone

Windshields are held in by a bead of urethane adhesive that has to reach a specific strength before the vehicle is safe to drive. We use OEM-approved urethane and follow the manufacturer's safe drive-away time, which depends on temperature and humidity. In a Lake County winter that can be longer than on a summer afternoon, and we will tell you exactly when your vehicle is ready.

Transfer or replace moldings, clips, and sensors

Rain sensors, humidity sensors, heated wiper park elements, and acoustic interlayers all need to be matched to the replacement glass. We confirm the part number against your VIN so the new windshield supports every feature the original did.

Recalibrate ADAS cameras

If your vehicle has lane keeping, automatic emergency braking, or adaptive cruise control, the forward camera is mounted to the windshield. Replacing the glass moves that camera by a fraction of a degree, which is enough to throw off its aim. We perform or arrange the static and dynamic recalibration your manufacturer specifies, and we document it so you have proof the system was reset.

OEM glass or aftermarket glass?

Both are options, and the right answer depends on your vehicle and your insurance coverage. OEM glass carries the manufacturer's logo and matches the original in thickness, tint, and acoustic layering. Quality aftermarket glass meets the same federal safety standard and often costs less. Where ADAS cameras are involved we lean toward OEM, because small differences in optical clarity can affect calibration. We will explain the difference on your estimate so you can decide.

Glass and your insurance claim

Glass damage is usually covered under comprehensive rather than collision coverage, and many policies carry a lower deductible for it. If the glass broke as part of an accident, we fold it into the same collision repair estimate so you are not juggling two claims. Illinois lets you pick your own shop for glass work, and you are not required to use the national chain your insurer's phone line may suggest.

Glass replacement questions

How long does a windshield replacement take?

Installation itself takes about an hour. The urethane cure time before you can safely drive is usually one to three hours depending on the weather, and ADAS recalibration can add another hour or two.

Can I wash my car right after the glass is replaced?

Wait at least 24 hours before a high-pressure wash, and leave the retention tape in place for the first day so the moldings seat properly.

Will a replacement windshield leak or whistle?

Not when the pinch weld is prepared correctly and the right moldings are installed. If you ever notice wind noise or water after one of our installations, bring it back and we will make it right.

Do you replace glass on trucks and commercial vans?
